The Diana Mixtape is on at Here At Outernet, 29 July - 10 August
Divina De Campo on How To Date Men
For our podcast, How To Date Men, we caught up with Divina De Campo for a behind-the-scenes look at the show.
In the conversation, we talk witches, Boudicca, and how to find intimacy in this crazy mixed up world we live in.
Is Princess Diana a queer icon?
Absolutely! I mean, name anybody else who had quite such an impact in terms of their fashion as Princess Diana - she was the original fashion icon. She would wear something and then people would be like, where do I get this? She started that trend. Nobody's looking at Princess Anne and going, I better wear that!
This show features five different performers all playing Diana. What do you bring to your portrayal of Diana that the other performers can't?
I'm a rough northerner - that's what I'm bringing!
Diana had this ability to connect with people and be really open, which we hadn't really seen from the Royals up until that point. They were very closed off. It was all about the mystery and about the separation. Whereas Diana had a way of connecting with people because she was just very open - and I'm always open for business!
You're all singing live in this production?
Yes - we all sing together, it's like an ensemble piece. We're laying out different aspects of Diana's life as an ensemble.
The music is all pop divas - there's Ava Max, there's Demi Lovato. I'm doing Cut To The Feeling.
Are there any other women that you'd like to see celebrated in a similar style?
Joan of Arc! There is a female cultural icon - somebody who had a massive impact.
I'd love to see a show about Boudicca fighting against the Romans. People should know about Boudicca. Like that was a powerhouse of a woman right there.
You seem to be constantly working. Do you ever get a chance to take some time off and relax?
I just started reading The Wheel of Time. I watched the series on Netflix and it was amazing. I love witches and magic. I've always been obsessed with witches ever since I was tiny - my favourite character was the wicked witch of the West.
Do you have any dating advice for Gaydar users?
Be honest about what you want. Be honest about who you are. Don't be catfishing. Nobody enjoys that. And before you go and meet somebody, have a wash. Unless that's not your thing. If that's not your thing, and they don't want that either, then that's totally fine. If you're coming to meet me, please have a wash before you come and meet me. And take a picture with your top off.
