What's on in London: Radical Rediscovery - Homosexual Acts and Beyond

Held in 1975, Homosexual Acts was the first official "gay" theatre season held in Britain - presented at London's Almost-Free Theatre.

Curated by Dr Susan Croft, Radical Rediscovery: Homosexual Acts & Beyond is a new exhibition that interrogates and celebrates Lesbian and Gay theatre’s early years via an array of posters, flyers, photos, magazines, props, set models, costumes, books, original footage and interviews with key participants.

The exhibition will explore the growth of the movement both in London and elsewhere, from highlighting the Gay Liberation Front activists who created street theatre to Gay Sweatshop touring plays that took queer theatre to audiences in isolated communities.

Also included in the exhibition is the radical drag of Bloolips and the lesbian camp of Hard Corps and Parker & Klein and the advent of Black Lesbian, Gay and Queer work in the late 1980s.

“50 years ago Ed Berman, founder of influential arts project Inter-Action agreed to host Britain’s first Gay theatre season at the Almost Free Theatre in Soho..." explains Dr Susan Croft. "The press came in droves because as Alan Wakeman, one of the producers and a founder of Gay Sweatshop said: ‘We were saying, ‘Yeah, we’re gay – so what?'"

"This exhibition will look in detail at this marginalised history and its impact on LGBTQ+ theatre today..." adds Croft. "Through a series of microgrants to young artists, we are also commissioning a series of new works-in-progress inspired by these earlier histories.”

Radical Rediscovery: Homosexual Acts and Beyond is presented at London Performance Studios from 7 November until 14 December.
