Jarman, The story of Derek JarmanWritten and performed by Mark Farrelly, directed by Sarah Louise Young”A mighty spirit is about to reawaken. Yours”Derek Jarman: film-maker, painter, gardener at Prospect Cottage, activist, writer... his influence remains as strong as it was on the day AIDS killed him in 1994. But his story, one of the most extraordinary lives ever lived, has never been told. Until now. This vibrant solo play by Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope / Howerd’s End) brings Derek back into being for a passionate, daring reminder of the courage it takes to truly live while you’re alive. A journey from Dungeness to deepest, brightest Soho and into the heart of one of our most iconoclastic artists.Jarman’s works include taboo-breaking films like Sebastiane, Jubilee and Caravaggio, pop videos for the Pet Shop Boys (It’s A Sin and Rent), his extraordinary borderless garden in Dungeness, his shocking last paintings, and his unforgettable final film Blue, consisting of a single continuous frame of blue and chronicling what it’s like to lose your sight…but never your artistic vision.Running time: 80 minutes, no interval.Bring a deckchair or cushion to sit on, this performance is outside in our Prospect Cottage inspired gardenPerformance starts at 7.30pm Doors 6.30pm, bar open 6pm - 10pmMark Farrelly is an actor and writer. Derek Jarman / Caravaggio film screening Tickets - London - OutSavvy
Caravaggio Film Screening7pm - 10pmIf you wanted to seem sophisticated in the 1980s, you went to see a Derek Jarman film – and his 1986 biopic of the baroque painter Caravaggio was a landmark in his recognition as a major director.Beautifully lit, vibrant with colour, and carefully, if minimally, designed, Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio (1986) has an immediate aesthetic appeal that links it more easily with the history of arthouse filmmaking than his other, more jagged, rough-and-ready works. Its release in the latter half of the 1980s also meant it found audiences just when the grimy, more overtly politicised post-punk era (with the miners’ strike and the repression of new age travellers) had begun to pass.Jarman’s film was entirely opposed to the new era and the corrupt, moneyed cardinals in the film (one using a 1980s electronic calculator, no less) signalled his resistance, but the wider world was now ready for an articulate, multi-faceted, literary and pictorial film artist, and both he and Peter Greenaway assumed notable public profiles. If you wanted to seem sophisticated, you went to see one of their films.Caravaggio (1986)For all its relative smoothness and brightness, the background to Caravaggio however, was varied and long-standing, with ideas changing over time. At one point Jarman and the artistic director Christopher Hobbs were to have also appeared as a framing device, discussing their practical intentions and designs, and in 1985, the year before Caravaggio’s release, Jarman remarked:“people tend to think that history is immutable, that there is something called reality. Reality is what interests me – that image of reality in Caravaggio. Why is a Ken Loach film more real than a Ken Russell film? And why is Italian neorealism more real than Michael Powell? For me the answer is that they aren’t. I actually see the news on television as fiction. People say ‘reality’, but what they forget is that the streets they walk through come out of people’s imagination, and are not real in that sense.”It was otherworldly stuff to get your head around, and signalled Jarman’s interest in metaphysical pathology and his influence on postmodern thinking. The film is about the world as represented in Caravaggio’s paintings, and was made to look just like them. Jarman clearly identified with the reputedly gay renaissance painter, who had an ambiguous relationship with his patrons and instead preferred to mix with and paint the people from the street.Tildas Swinton was now on-board the Jarman ship, and it appeared as though the director might find it easier to raise money after several years in the wilderness. It would never be so straightforward, of course. Looking at Jarman’s world as captured in this film – not just Caravaggio’s – we can see now a peak point of a certain aesthetic, the flagging that the filmmaker is an artist, and the passing and eclipsing of a ‘what if’ moment. What if Jarman got a moderately decent budget, what if he got to make one of these longstanding ideas that he’d worked on and refined over several years, and what if – and what would happen, if – he got widely more fully recognised as an important British film director? The world was a horror show, but at least certain things had come to pass.Doors open at 7pm, screening at 7.30pmBar open 7pm - 10pm

Frequently asked questions What is the level of intimacy at your workshops? There will be some simple techniques such as a holding hands, giving someone a shoulder massage or a hug and some eye gazing. Some self-pleasuring techniques demonstrated will include genital touch, however, there is no oral or penetrative sex permitted. Anyone who attempts to cross this boundary or who doesn’t respect someone else’s boundaries in any of the exercises will be asked to leave the workshop. The emphasis is really on energetic transmission rather than physical. Do I have to be nude? No. You can be fully clothed, in underwear or nude if you are comfortable with that. What if I don’t want to do one of the exercises?Consent, especially self-consent, is a core value of this practice. We honour your “no” as much as your “yes.” While we encourage you to explore your edges, self-compassion is key—it’s always okay to observe or opt out of any exercise if you’re not comfortable or ready. What time should I arrive? Please arrive 10-15 mins before the class so you can settle in. We will lock the doors 15 mins after the start time and don’t allow late comers. This is to ensure that everyone has heard and agreed to the group Tantra agreements, creating safety within the group. Who is this event for? We’re proud to be a queer-friendly and gender-inclusive space. This workshop welcomes all who identify as GBTQ+ men —regardless of relationship status, age, or background. Everyone is invited to explore Tantra in a supportive and inclusive environment. Do I need a partner?Nope. You can come solo, or bring a friend or partner if you like. Tantra is all about personal growth and connection, so whether you’re flying solo or attending as a duo, you’ll get a transformative experience that’s just for you. If I have a partner can I stay with them for the exercises?Yes, you’re welcome to stay with your partner that you came with, however, we will be switching partners throughout the event and invite everyone to participate in this so you can get the most out of the experience. Everything in the workshop is invitational, so you’ll always choose what feels right for you and practice self-consent. I’ve never been to a Tantra class before—is this beginner-friendly?Yes. This class is designed to be welcoming for all levels, especially beginners. Michael will introduce Tantra fundamentals step-by-step, so you’ll feel supported and comfortable as you explore. Just bring your curiosity and an open mind. I’ve been to lots of Tantra classes—will I still get value from this?Absolutely. Even if you’re experienced, this workshop offers something unique. Tantra has endless layers, and each session is an opportunity to dive deeper. Approaching with a beginner’s mindset, you’ll discover new insights and nuances that take your practice to the next level.
