What to watch: Eden & Charlie
A film by Benoît Duvette exploring repressed desire.
In this short film from Benoît Duvette, Éden and Charlie meet by chance in an uninhabited house.
Through their explorations, the boys discover hidden secrets that force them to confront their repressed desires and come to terms with their identities.
Augustin Dewinter plays Charlie and Néven Carron plays Éden. Carron is an accomplished singer and his voice is featured in the film, with music playing an important role in creating the atmosphere of the storytelling.
"These two boys meet in a large house, explore the place together, and through their shared moments, gradually reveal themselves they discover their feelings for one another..." explains Duvette. "The project focuses on the discovery of the homosexual identity of the two characters and on the way they help each other learn self-acceptance. This theme unfolds within a poetic, gentle and even sensual atmosphere. It takes shape through the choice of a mysterious setting: a house and the secrets it holds; through photography, placed at the heart of the story, and the question of identity intrinsically tied to the medium; and through the wounds of the soul and body, notably embodied by the appearance of an injured horse, symbolizing the connection between the fragility of bodies and the cruelty of the outside world."
It's a film with a gentle narrative and sensually wistful characters. Worth a watch.
